Senior Asani Samuels of the men’s soccer team and senior Tori Quinn of the women’s lacrosse team were honored as Canisius College Male and Female Athlete of the Year at the athletic department’s annual awards ceremony on Monday night. The awards are voted on by Canisius student-athletes, coaches, administrators and support staff.

The first player in program history to collect all-region accolades on three occasions, Samuels finished his career by earning NSCAA All-Northeast Region Second Team honors and All-MAAC First Team accolades during the 2014 season. Samuels set career highs with 19 points, eight goals and three assists as a senior. He finished the campaign ranked fourth in the MAAC in both points and goals, while his four game-winning tallies are tied for first in the conference and 24th nationally.

A two-time all-conference selection, Samuels finished his Golden Griffin career with 38 points, 16 goals and six assists. He ranks 10th in the school’s record book with his 16 career tallies.

Quinn was a unanimous selection as MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in conference history to earn Player of the Year accolades three times during her career. She finished her season ranked in the top 15 nationally in three categories – points (15th), assists (10th) and caused turnovers per game (sixth). Overall, Quinn led the Griffs with 76 points, 40 goals, 36 assists, 43 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls.

A four-time all-conference selection, Quinn also finished her career with a school-record 251 points and 154 goals, while rankings second with 97 assists.

Samuels is the second men’s soccer player to collect Canisius Male Athlete of the Year honors, joining Alan McGreal in 2008. Quinn is fifth women’s lacrosse student-athlete to be recognized, including the fourth in a row, following Whitney Card (2006), Megan Oosting (2012), Morgan Leonard (2013) and Maria Kotas (2014).
