10 Questions With...

Andrew Coy
Sr. | Cross Country

1. What is the best part about being a Griff?
I’m a huge fan of the small school environment, which allows for the opportunity to find the optimal balance between academics and athletics. Getting to claim Bill Lawson as my roommate is also a huge plus.

2. What are three words that you’d use to describe yourself?
Stubborn; Sarcastic; Quasi-philosopher

3. Do you have a nickname? If so what’s the story behind it?
In high school all of my coaches would refer to me as Coydog. Not really sure how that one got started, but I guess the origins are pretty obvious. I had one coach that didn’t even know my first name until my fourth year on the track team, because the nickname was so prevalent.

4. What is your favorite T.V. show? What was your favorite T.V. show as a kid?
As a kid, it was Legends of the Hidden Temple, how could it not be? Nickelodeon as a whole was a staple on the T.V. when I was younger. They just don’t make cartoons like they used to – Hey Arnold, CatDog, Rugrats, Rocket Power, etc. Currently, I’m riding the Breaking Bad bandwagon really hard.

5. If you weren’t running cross country, what sport would you be playing?
I only started running because I broke both bones in my wrist two days before modified soccer try-outs in seventh grade, so I guess I would have kept at it for at least a few more years otherwise. I’m also pretty big into Nordic skiing and did that competitively in high school for a few years when I wanted a break from running year-round. Biathlon (skiing and shooting) seems like it would be a good time.

6. Do you and your teammates have an activity that you like to do outside of your sport?
We’ve been known to get some pretty intense whiffle ball games going. It’s always a big deal to prove that you don’t have the worst hand-eye coordination on the team.

7. What is your favorite song currently?
Pompeii by Bastille! It’s been stuck in my head for upwards of a month now.

8. What is your pregame ritual, routine or superstition?
For the last two years, I’ve grown a beard for cross country (starting in May and ending in November) in the hopes of attaining some sort of Samson-esque power.

9. What was your favorite toy as a child?
I have every Hess Truck from the year that I was born all the way up to the most recent one. Those things were worth hours on end of entertainment.

10. What is your favorite quote or phrase?
In high school, the motto for our cross country team was SISU - the Finnish word for grit, or having guts. It was something we were expected to live by, in all aspects of life. It really was drilled into our heads, and half a dozen of us that continued running competitively past our high school days have SISU tattoos to let everyone know where we came from and to keep the tradition of SISU alive and well.
