ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Kayla Hoohuli scored 18 points to lead the No. 8 seeded Canisius women’s basketball team on offense, but the No. 9 seeded Monmouth Hawks eliminated the Griffs from the 2015 MAAC tournament, winning 68-56, on Thursday morning. Canisius finishes the season with a 10-20 record while Monmouth advances in the tournament to take on Quinnipiac on Friday.

After holding a slim, first half lead, 24-23, the Hawks exploded on offense in the second half, outscoring the Blue and Gold, 45-32, including an 18-5 run with seven minutes left in the game which halted the Canisius comeback.

Hoohuli finished the game 7-of-15 from the field but just 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Crystal Porter also finished with double-digits with 12 points.

Monmouth had three players who finished the game with double-figures and was led by Helena Kurt with 22 points. Kurt shot 6-of-14 for the game but didn’t miss from the charity stripe, going 8-of-8. Jasmine Walker and Christina Mitchell also notched dougle-figures as the duo scored 14 each.

Canisius took an early 8-2 lead in the games first few minutes as Porter and Emily Weber helped stake claim to the advantage.

Monmouth took its first lead with 15:57 as Olson drained a trey to make it 9-8. The two teams exchanged points before a Walker jumper with 7:30 left, made it 21-15.

The Griffs limited Monmouth to just two points the rest of the half as the squad took a 24-23 lead to the halfway point.

Out of the break Monmouth retook the lead right away and pushed the advantage to 11 as a trey by Olson’s trey at the 13:20 made it 42-31.

Canisius kept fighting and got the lead down to just five as a Hoohuli trey made it 50-45, but Monmouth buckled down and went on a 18-5 run that sealed the victory.

The Griffs finish the season 10-20 and went 8-12 in MAAC play and Hoohuli notched the Griffs lone all-conference selection as she earned All-MAAC second team.

Notes: Monmouth’s win snaps a three-game losing streak as the series now sits at 3-2 all-time … Kayla Hoohuli ends the season with a seven-game double-figure scoring streak and hit double-digits in 22-of-30 games this season … Hoohuli was the lone All-MAAC honoree for the Griffs as she earned second team honors.
