The Canisius College women’s volleyball team dropped its 2001 home opener on Sunday in five sets to visiting Binghamton University. The Griffs are now 0-4 overall on the season after losing 20-30, 30-20, 24-30, 30-19, 13-15.
The freshman combination of Kim Hoffman (Babylon, NY) and Christina Wildes (Long Beach, NY) led the way for the Griffs. Hoffman led the team with 14 kills and 19 digs, while her teammate Wildes added 13 kills, six digs and three aces. Fellow freshman Nicole Boucher (Eastmeadow, NY) was credited with seven kills and seven digs in the losing effort.
Junior Kelly Sieber led the Griffs attack with 34 of the team’s 37 assists. Sophomore Nicloe Lucie (Lancaster, NY) had 11 digs as well.
For the Bearcats (1-1), this win is their first at the Division I level. Sophomore Morgan Jimerson led the Bearcats with 20 kills, while freshman Michele Heck was credited with 11 kills and 21 digs. Binghamton freshman Jennifer Smith had a great day in her homecoming to western New York. The North Tonawanda grad was good for 14 kills and 10 digs.
Canisius will be back in action on Wednesday, September 5, when the team travels to St. Francis (Pa.) College to battle the Red Flash in a non-conference match-up.
