Volleyball Hosts Iona and Fairfield for Two Key Matches

The Golden Griffins enter the weekend with a 16-11 overall record, 5-2 in MAAC action. The Blue and Gold have won 10 of their last 12 matches and have locked up the second winning season in the program’s 28-year history. The team has won six-straight matches for the first time in program history, and needs one win to secure a trip to this year’s postseason tournament, which will be hosted by Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y.
The Griffs are led offensively by junior Christina Wildes (right), who ranks ninth in the MAAC in kills, averaging 3.60 per game. Sophomore Leigh Launhardt is the conference’s reigning Player of the Week and leads the team in hitting percentage at .303. She is ranked second in the conference with 1.11 blocks per game and ranks second on the squad with 2.98 kills per game. Senior setter Jackie Reed is the conference’s leader in assists with 11.16 helpers per game. She is only the second player in program history to post 1,000-plus assists in two consecutive seasons, and ranks second all-time at Canisius in career assists with 2,236.
Iona College enters this weekend’s action with a 16-11 overall record and a 5-2 conference mark. Fairfield was picked to finish in the conference’s top spot by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll. The Stags enter the weekend 5-21 overall and 3-4 in MAAC play. Fairfield will play at Niagara Nov. 8, at 1 p.m.
Canisius will square off with Iona Nov. 8, at 1 p.m., in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Blue and Gold is 8-5 this season at home. The Griffs will close out the regular season with Fairfield Nov. 9, on Senior Day. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
