Volleyball Falls to Texas-Arlington in the Season Opener

Van Antwerp hit .356 on the night after posting 19 kills on 45 attack attempts. Morgan Rogers had 17 kills and a team-best 22 kills in the winning effort while teammate Caley Smith was credited with 12 kills and 12 digs for the Mavericks. Texas-Arlington setter Heather Dunn posted a game-high 49 assists, 12 digs and two block assists.
Canisius had three players register double figures in the kills category, led by senior Christina Wildes, who pounded 14 kills. Sophomore Mary Boller scored 13 kills on 30 attack attempts, while teammate Kim Hoffman had 12 kills and a team leading 25 digs in the loss. Freshman setter Lauren Lackovich posted 34 assists in the loss for the Blue and Gold.
Canisius scored a 30-25 win in the first game after hitting .255 as a team while holding Texas-Arlington to a .100 team hitting percentage in the first game. The Mavericks came back with three-straight wins to secure the match and closed out the Griffs by hitting .421 as a team in the fourth and final game.
Texas-Arlington was credited with eight team blocks, led by Melissa Marek’s four block assists. Canisius had four blocks as a team, led by Wildes’ one solo block and two block assists.
Canisius returns to action with two matches on Saturday in the second day of the Western New York Invitational. Canisius will play host to Stony Brook at 1 p.m., before closing out the tournament against Binghamton at 7 p.m. Texas-Arlington will start Saturday’s slate at the Koessler Athletic Center with a match against the University at Buffalo at 10 a.m., and then travel to Niagara for a 7 p.m. match.
