Volleyball Wins Colgate Invitational

The Canisius College volleyball team scored wins over Hartford and Colgate on the final day of the 2004 Colgate Invitational to win the four-team event and finish the weekend 3-0. The Golden Griffins scored a 3-1 (30-22, 30-20, 29-31, 30-20) win over Hartford in their first match of the day before dropping the host Raiders 3-1 (30-26, 32-34, 30-22, 30-12) in the night cap. The two wins on Saturday improve the team to 3-4 overall in the 2004 season.

Senior Christina Wildes was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting a .192 hitting percentage with a team-high 72 kills and 41 digs. On Saturday, Wildes hit .234 with 51 kills and 24 digs to help lead the Blue and Gold to the two non-conference wins. Sophomore Mary Boller was also recognized to the all-tournament team for her play after collecting 32 kills, three solo blocks and eight blocks assists in three matches.

In the team's win over Hartford (2-6), Wildes led the offensive attack with a career-high 25 kills on 67 attack attempts to go along with nine digs. Kim Hoffman finished the contest with 18 kills, 13 digs and three block assists, while Boller registered 10 kills, three solo blocks and a career-high six block assists. As a team, Canisius collected 19 team blocks in the win over Hartford, while holding the Hawks to a .053 team hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Lauren Lackovich collected 42 assists and 13 digs for the Blue and Gold. Fellow freshman Jess Stackhouse picked up a match-high 26 digs, a service ace and an assist. Sophomore Emily McNabb finished the match with four solo blocks and four block assists, both career highs, to go along with two kills.

In the team's final match of the day, Hoffman registered a career-high 27 kills and picked up 21 digs while Wildes posted a career-high 26 kills to lead the Griffs past the host Colgate Raiders for the fifth-straight time in the all-time series. Stackhouse collected a career best 30 digs in the win to tie a 13-year old school record for digs in a four-game match.

Lackovich was credited with a career-high 55 assists and added 12 digs for the Griffs and Boller drilled 11 kills in the winning effort. McNabb helped Canisius' defensive effort with a solo block and a career best five block assists.

The Griffs will return to action Sept. 17-18, at the Rose Hill Classic at Fordham University. Canisius will play its first match Sept. 17, against Wagner. Game time is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
