Box Score

The Canisius College volleyball team fought off a hard-charging Saint Peter’s squad and won 30-16, 30-24, 22-30, 22-30, 15-13 Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Freshman Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) led Canisius (5-12, 3-3 MAAC) with 13 kills and eight block assists while freshman Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Michelle Godfrey (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) had 11 kills to go along with two solo blocks and six block assists while junior Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) fell one kill short of a triple-double with nine kills, 22 assists and 10 digs.

“We found a way to win the match today,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Saint Peter’s never gave up while being down two games. We were able to battle in the fifth game and get the win.”

Canisius controlled the first two games, using an eight-point run in the first game to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 14-7 lead with seven of those points coming on the serve of Lauren Lackovich (Bloomington, Ill.). The second game was closer, but once the Griffs took a 3-2 lead, they never gave up the advantage and went up two games.

The Peahens then won the next two games, never trailing in the third game. In game four, Saint Peter’s won 10 consecutive points to turn a 17-16 lead into a 27-16 advantage and eventually force a fifth game.

Saint Peter’s carried over its momentum into the deciding game and held a 9-7 lead before Canisius won the next two points to tie it at 9-9. The squads stayed close until Canisius won two straight to go up 14-12 on a kill by Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio). After a kill by Kelly Blanchfield cut the Canisius lead to one point, Canisius won the match on the next point on an attack error by Kate McFadden.
Kim Mendoza led Saint Peter’s (4-15, 2-5) with 27 kills and 26 digs while Stephanie Phillips had 20 kills. Caroline Garvey had 65 assists for the Peahens.

Canisius returns to the road next weekend for two conference matches as the Golden Griffins play at Marist and Siena. The Griffs and Red Foxes meet on Saturday, with match time set for 6 p.m.
