The Week of January 13 19
Sunday seemed to be the official game day. Besides watching the upsets in the NFL with both the Chargers and the Giants moving into their conference championships, many of the Griffs spent Sunday playing X-Box 360 and for good reason.

School started on Monday, which meant that living the life of just hockey was over (how depressing). The only positive of the day was that very few of the professors kept their class for the whole period. It was get in, receive the syllabus and get out!

Tuesday was the second “first day of class.” Once again it was all about the logistics. The introduction to classes helped the Griffs begin to adjust to the busy life of once again being a student-athlete. This was essential because the athletic part was not getting any easier. The team had a heavy lift on Monday followed by a cardio day Tuesday and another heavy lift on Wednesday.

Our practices focused on playing an up-tempo and good team game because those were the keys for the weekend against Army. It was also a nice change for the Griffs to get back to practicing at a more convenient time of 2 p.m., as opposed to the previous week’s practices that had been at 10 a.m.

Thursday was our final travel day of the season for a conference series. Due to the long bus trip, practice was held at 7 a.m. and followed by a 1 p.m. bus departure for West Point, NY. As much fun I have bonding with the team on the bus, I was truly appreciating one of the final bus trips of the year.

After arriving in West Point at our hotel, I was shocked to find out that there would be a non-goaltender staying in the goalie room. This was a first for me, but fortunately Taylor Anderson (Griff # 35) and I were staying with easy-going and tough-guy Pete MacDougall (Griff # 32). Nap times were coordinated and the room ran without a hitch.

Our well-known road routine was in full effect on Friday morning. Breakfast was followed by morning skate and pre-game nap time. This included the most entertaining part of the day, which was traveling to Army and seeing the amazing football stadium, which has a capacity of 39,929 fans.

The games were upon us and the Griffs were attempting to win both to climb the Atlantic Hockey standings. Friday was a success as the Griffs came out with a convincing 3-0 victory. Saturday ended differently and Army finally pulled ahead, scoring a short handed goal with less then 10 minutes remaining to win 2-1.

We are on the way home, and I am once again frustrated. It is a longer ride home without two wins over the weekend.

Take care,

Andrew Loewen Griff #1
