Thomas R. Hersey ('69) - Canisius College football saw some of its most exciting years during the tenure of head coach Tom Hersey from 1982-1991. The reputation of his teams drew record numbers of fans, notably when a crowd of more than 5,000 people watched the Golden Griffins take on the University at Buffalo Bulls. With a keen eye for talent, Tom recruited some of the college’s finest athletes and scholars, including two Academic All-Americans, six players who were later inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame, and one who went on to play in the NFL. Hersey's squads beat the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College five consecutive times; snatched a breathtaking victory from the University of Rochester in the final minutes of a game with a score of 31-29; and in 1983, became the first Division III team to defeat the University of Dayton with a score of 17-7. Those triumphs helped make the 1980s the winningest era in the history of Canisius football and Hersey the winningest coach with a record of 49-2-2.
