Canisius College freshman setter Janelle Davis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced today. Davis is the only freshman in the MAAC to win the award three times in 2008.

In the Golden Griffins’ two wins last week, Davis averaged 9.71 assists per set, recording 38 assists in the team’s 3-1 victory over Manhattan and 30 assists in the 3-0 sweep of Iona. Davis had six kills on the weekend, with five of those kills coming on seven attempts against the Lady Jaspers. The 5-foot-9 setter averaged 1.86 digs per in the two matches and 0.71 blocks per set, which included four block assists against the Gaels.

Davis won the award on Sept. 22 when she averaged 9.5 assists per set in wins over Siena and Marist. Davis also won the award after the first weekend of the season when she averaged 9.2 assists per set and had a double-double in the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament (Aug. 29-30).

Canisius is now 11-6 on the season and is tied for second place in the MAAC with a 6-2 league record. Canisius, which is 4-0 in MAAC home matches this season, continues its four-match homestand this weekend when the Golden Griffins host Loyola on Saturday at 3 p.m., and Rider on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center.
