“In today’s match, we had more emotion and effort, but didn’t take advantage of enough opportunities to get the win,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Hopefully we can learn through this and our maturity catches up with our talent.”
Marist (16-11, 10-6 MAAC) jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set but Canisius battled back to take a 10-9 lead on a solo block from Godfrey. The teams stayed close until Marist won three consecutive points to take a 20-17 lead. Canisius came right back with a block from Godfrey and Good and a service ace from Severyn, but the Red Foxes won five straight points to close out the set.
After Marist won the second set, Canisius jumped out to a quick lead in the third set and never looked back. A kill from Good made it 10-5 in favor of Canisius, and the Red Foxes would get as close as 17-15 on a kill from Alexandra Schultze. The Griffs then won five straight points, capped by a service ace from Lettow and would win the set on an ace from Kaela Glenn.
Canisius played its longest set of the season in the fourth set. Marist had a match point at 24-23, but a block from Godfrey and Jasmine Brennan knotted the score at 24-24. The Griffs couldn’t convert on three set points to force a fifth set. The Red Foxes eventually won on their fourth match point, getting back-to-back kills from Schultze.
