John McCarthy ('56) - A three-year letter winner with the Golden Griffins men's basketball team, McCarthy led the Griffs to a 46-28 record during his three years. At the conclusion of his career, McCarthy ranked first in career scoring (1160) and second in career rebounding (457).  During his sophomore year, his 17 free throws versus Siena set a single game record at the time. In his junior season, McCarthy was the Queen City Invitational MVP. He led the team in scoring, averaging 21.3 points in three NCAA Tournament games, including a 28 point effort in a 73-71 win over Villanova.

During his senior season, McCarthy was named team captain, Queen City All-Tournament team, and again led the team in scoring with 514 points.  At the time of his induction, his 514 season points ranked 14th best effort in school history. He finished his career with the Griffs averaging 11.7 points in three NCAA Tournament games, including 16 points in a four-overtime triumph against NC State.

At the time of his induction, his career scoring average of 19.0 points per game was fifth best of all-time. McCarthy went on to play professionally for the Rochester Royals (1956-57), Cincinnati (1958-59), St. Louis Hawks (1959-62), and world-champion Boston Celtics (1963-64. In his NBA career he totaled 2450 points in 316 games, and also scored 95 points for the Pittsburgh Wrens (ABL). In 1974, McCarthy took a coaching position with the Golden Griffins, and for three years (1974-77) helped the Griffs to a 28-49 record.
