Hockey Falls in Exhibition

Strong special teams play lifted the visiting Guelph Gryphons over the Canisius College hockey team in an exhibition contest on Saturday night, 7-2.

Guelph tallied five power-play goals in nine opportunities, while keeping the Griffs scoreless in their six chances to earn the exhibition victory.

Juniors Matt Zuke and Cory Conacher each scored for the Griffs.

Guelph got on the scoreboard first, taking advantage of the game's first power play. Kris Belan hammered in a shot 9:15 into the contest to give the Gryphons the early 1-0 advantage.

Canisius knotted the contest at one when Zuke scored 1:36 later. Sophomore Dave Kostuch skated the puck in over the blue line and fed it to senior Jason Weeks. Weeks then found Zuke streaking through the slot and the junior buried the shot to tie the game at one.

Guelph took advantage of a second power opportunity to take the lead, scoring just after a Canisius penalty expired. David Volpe scored with 4:22 left in the opening period to give the Gryphons the 2-1 edge heading into the first intermission.

The Gryphons stretched their lead to three with two second-period goals. Jon-Thomas MacDonald redirected a shot in at the 11:16 mark and Derek Knowles tipped in a shot on the power play at the 13:40 mark to give Guelph a 4-1 advantage after two periods.

Guelph continued its dominance with the extra man in the third period, scoring three power play goals. Belan, MacDonald and Patrick Campbell each tallied a goal on the power play before Conacher scored an extra-attacker goal with 2:03 remaining in the contest. The junior was fed by classmate Vincent Scarsella in the slot and fired a shot in for the score. Freshman Preston Shupe also registered an assist on the goal.

Guelph held a 29-11 advantage in shots during the contest. Junior Taylor Anderson recorded 22 saves in net for the Griffs.

Canisius returns to Atlantic Hockey play on Friday, playing at Bentley. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
