Robert Morris pulled away from the Canisius College men's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 17-11 victory in Moon Township, Pa. The loss drops the Griffs to 2-5 on the season, while the Colonials improve to 8-2.
Junior Adam Jones led the Griffs with four points, scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists. Sophomore Brendan O'Hagan scored a career-best two goals with seniors Mike Benzinger and John Minieri each adding two tallies.
Junior Nick LoCoco and sophomore Simon Giourmetakis each registered two points on a goal and an assist, while senior Matt Barkas rounded out the scoring with a goal.
Jones and senior defender Dan Coates each registered a game-high three caused turnovers on the afternoon. Coates also led the Griffs with four ground balls to anchor the Canisius defense.
The Griffs opened the scoring when Giourmetakis netted a goal 2:27 into the contest. Robert Morris tallied the next two scores but Jones responded with a pair of goals in the final 1:59 as Canisius headed into the second quarter with a 3-2 lead.
The Colonials scored three goals in the first 4:21 of the second to grab a 5-3 lead but the Griffs answered with a 3-0 run of their own. Benzinger scored two-straight goals, including one on an extra-man opportunity, and LoCoco finished the run with 7:50 left in the half.
Robert Morris, however, scored the final five goals of the first half and then added the first tally of the second half for a commanding 11-6 lead.
Canisius was able to pull within two by scoring the next three goals of the game. O'Hagan netted two goals as Canisius attempted to rally and Minieri added a score to cut the Robert Morris advantage to 13-11 with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter.
The Colonials responded with two goals in a 61-second span as Robert Morris pulled away for the victory. The Colonials used a 6-1 run to seal the victory before Minieri scored the final goal of the game.
Robert Morris held a 37-29 advantage in shots and 17-15 edge in faceoffs. The two teams, which both entered the game ranked in the top three nationally in man-up offense, went a combined 1-for-9 with the extra man. Canisius was 1-for-5, while Robert Morris went scoreless in four man-up opportunities.
Keith Lee and Trevor Moore led the Colonials with four goals apiece. Charles Ruppert and Dillon Pope split time in goal to anchor the Robert Morris defense, making five and four saves respectively.
Sophomores Sean Callahan and Kyle Bell each saw time in goal for the Griffs. Callahan recorded four saves in the start, while Bell stopped five shots in relief.
Canisius returns to MAAC play on Saturday, hosting Marist at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
Game Notes: Jones is now tied for 13th in school history with 106 career points, drawing even with David Sturiano (1996-99) ... Canisius has scored at least one man-up goal in each game this season ... Barkas' goal was the seventh of the defender's career and the second this season ...
