Canisius College redshirt seniors Chris Cox (St. George, Ontario) and Shane Davis (Belmont, Ontario) were
drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the Major League Baseball Draft on
Wednesday. Cox was selected in the 39th round (No. 1189 pick overall) and Davis
was taken in the 42nd round (No. 1279 overall). Davis and Cox give
Canisius three selections in the MLB draft in the last two days and are the
seventh and eighth players associated with the program to be drafted in the
last four years.
Cox made 41 appearances in his career
with Canisius, appearing as a starter and out of the bullpen. As a senior, Cox
made nine appearances out of the bullpen and was 1-1 with two saves and a 0.69
ERA. Cox had 14 strikeouts in those 13 innings and finished third in Canisius
history in strikeouts per nine innings. As a starter in 2010, Cox went 4-1 in
seven MAAC starts and threw a complete game against Fairfield on May 1, 2010.
Davis made 56 starts as a Golden Griffin,
going 35-12 and setting the program record for wins during his second season.
His 35 victories ranked second among active pitchers nationally this season. In
the Canisius record books, Davis ranked fourth in career ERA and first in walks
per nine innings. As a senior, Davis went 5-6 with a 3.23 ERA, the
second-lowest earned run average in his four-year career. The 6-foot lefty was
a two-time First-Team All-MAAC Selection, earned MAAC Pitcher and MAAC Rookie
of the Year honors in 2008 and earned All-American honors after his freshman
season when Davis went 12-1 with a 2.42 ERA.
Senior Sean Jamieson was drafted on Tuesday, in the 17th round
by the Oakland Athletics. Steve McQuail was selected as a junior by the Toronto
Blue Jays in the 22nd round in 2010. Kevin Mahoney (23rd round, New
York Yankees) and Kevin Mailloux (45th round, Seattle Mariners) were
taken in the 2009 MLB Draft. Incoming freshman Benson Merritt (42nd
round, Cincinnati Reds) and Nathan
Linseman (45th round, Detroit Tigers) were taken in 2008 with
Linseman just ending his redshirt sophomore season at Canisius.
Cox and Davis are the first pitchers
enrolled at Canisius to be drafted since Joe Mamott was taken by the Boston Red
Sox in the sixth round of the 1994 MLB Draft.
