The Canisius College volleyball team rebounded from a first-set loss and defeated Rider University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 23-25, 25-20, 25-9 and 25-23 to improve to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 16 kills while posting a .302 attack percentage. Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski had 11 kills for the Griffs while junior Allyson Severyn had 32 digs. Senior Janelle Davis had a double-double with 43 assists and 15 digs. Senior Samantha Good added six blocks and sophomore Jessica Warner added five blocks to the winning effort.

"We gave away too many points in that first set and it took some time during the second set to rectify those mistakes," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We focused on taking care of things on our side of the net and played better in those last two sets."

Canisius won six of the opening eight points and built a 14-9 first-set lead. The Broncs used a 7-2 run to tie the set at 16-16 and used a 4-1 run later in the set to take control and eventually win the opening set. Canisius committed a combined 15 errors in the opening set.

The Griffs evened the match by taking the second set. Canisius once again took the early lead, going up 8-3 after a Rider error. The Broncs battled back again, taking a 12-11 lead after winning five consecutive points. Canisius broke open the set by scoring five straight points, going up 22-17 on a service ace from Severyn.

Canisius won the first three points and never looked back in the third set. The Griffs then used a 10-1 run, winning five points on the serve of Severyn and senior Joanna Burt to go up 17-5. Brawn had five kills on 10 attempts in the set as Canisius hit .343 in the set.

The teams stayed close throughout the fourth set and Rider went up 18-15 after a kill from Kayla Wong. The Griffs then scored six of the next seven points to go up 21-19. Rider tied the set at 22-22, but Canisius closed out the set, including a service ace from Brawn and kill from Good, to win the match.

Wong and Jaclyn Webber each had 10 kills for Rider (4-17, 2-7 MAAC)

Canisius continues its five-match homestand on Sunday afternoon, when the Golden Griffins host Loyola University. Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
