The
Canisius College volleyball team swept a conference weekend for the first time
in 2011 with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 win over Loyola University at the Koessler
Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 9-11
overall and 4-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn totaled a match-high
14 kills and also had nine digs. Junior Samantha
Good had eight kills and three blocks to go along with a .353 attack
percentage. Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski
hit .316 with seven kills and five digs. Senior Janelle Davis had 27 assists and nine digs while junior Allyson Severyn had 15 digs.
"It
was a good win for us today and is really enjoyable to have back-to-back wins
for the first time in a long time," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "That was the closest to a complete match of
volleyball that we've played all year."
Down
10-9 in the first set, Canisius won four straight points to gain the lead it
would never relinquish. Brawn had two kills in the stretch along
with a kill from Good. The Greyhounds cut the Canisius lead to 13-12, but
Canisius extended its lead with a 7-2 run, taking advantage of four Loyola
attack errors, en route to winning the first set.
Canisius
won the first two points and never trailed in the second set. The Greyhounds
would tie the score at 7-7, but Canisius won five consecutive points, which was
part of a 13-2 run that was capped by a service ace from Brawn. Good had five
kills on six attack attempts in the set as Canisius hit .370 as a team.
Loyola
came out of the break by winning the first seven points of the third set before
Canisius battled its way back. The Griffs responded by winning four
straight points and eventually tied the match at 12-12. Canisius took its first
lead of the set at 17-16 on a Loyola attack error. The Greyohunds tied the
score at 19-19 but Canisius won the next two points and wouldn't give up the
lead, closing out the match on the fourth service ace of the match for Brawn.
Tina
Catanach led Loyola (6-16, 3-6 MAAC) with nine kills. Lauren Andersen totaled 31 assists while
Janet PRessler had 13 digs and Katie Dircks had 12 digs.
Canisius
continues its five-match homestand on Wednesday night, when the Golden Griffins
host rival Niagara University in a Battle of the Bridge contest. Match time in
the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to
participate in the "Dig Pink" campaign and wear pink to the games.
Notes: Canisius
defeated Loyola for the third time in the last four years in the Koessler
Athletic Center... Canisius improves to 35-14 in the KAC against MAAC opponents
since 2006... Brawn had double-digit kills for the 18th time this
season... Brawn matched a career high with the four service aces (Oct. 24, 2010
against Saint Peter's)... Canisius had eight or more service aces for the fourth
time this year and third time in the last six matches.
