The Canisius College men and
women's cross country team will travel across town to the Amherst
Audubon Golf Course to compete in the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Northeast
Regional Championships on Nov. 12. The men's 10K race, comprised of 353
runners from 39 teams, will begin at noon. The women's 6K race will
follow at 1:15 p.m. with 364 runners from 40 teams.
The Golden Griffins return to regional competition after not competing in the 2010
Northeast Regional Championships at Hammonassett State Park in Madison,
Conn. At last season's regional championships, reigning champion
Syracuse swept both races.
At the 2009 Northeast Regional
Championships in Boston, Mass., the women's team finished 28th overall,
while the men's team placed 32nd. In the race, senior Christine
Mulvihill finished 133rd with former Griff Maura Frauenhofer leading the
way to finish 86th. The men were led by Vasilis Kariolis, who placed
173rd followed by junior Alex Simon's 202nd-place finish.
The Northeast Regional
Championships is one of nine total regional championships. Each race
will determine the teams and individuals, who will compete in the NCAA
Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 21.
The top-two scoring teams from
the men's and women's races at each regional championship will receive an
automatic berth in the national championships. The top-25 individual
performers in each race will receive All-Region honors.
Both admission and parking for
the race are free. Parking will be available in the University at
Buffalo Stadium Parking Lot, located off of the Coventry Road Entrance.
Shuttle busses will be provided between the lot and the race course. The
awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the women's race at
approximately 2 p.m. near the Amherst Audubon Golf Course Clubhouse.
