Men Place First, Women Second at Fr. O'Neil Invite

Cross Country/Track Canisius College Athletics

Men 28th, Women 31st at NCAA Northeast Regional

Buffalo, N.Y. - The Canisius College men's and women's cross country teams faced its final challenge of the 2011 season, competing at the 2011 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at the Amherst Audubon Golf Course on Saturday afternoon. In the men's 10K race, the team finished 28th overall with freshman Chad Maloy, finishing as the top Canisius male in 157th place. The Canisius women occupied 31st overall in the 6K race, as senior Christine Mulvihill was the top Canisius female in 128th place.

In both the men's and women's championships, reigning champion Syracuse swept once again. This marks three straight Northeast Regional Championships for the Orange. Following Syracuse on the men's side was 2011 MAAC Champion Iona and Columbia, while on the women's side, Boston College and Cornell trailed the Orange.

The Canisius men's finish of 28th overall was the second highest finish for the squad under head coach Pete Osmond. Maloy concluded his freshman campaign as theGriffs' top runner for the seventh consecutive race, finishing as the top runner in each race this season. Maloy's time of 34:31.2 placed the freshman, 157th among 240 competitors.

Sophomore Nathan McCabe finished the race 169th in 34:43.1 followed by senior Jonathan McDonald in 173rd in a time of 34:48.0. Freshman Andrew Coy had a strong performance, finishing third among his teammates, while placing 206th overall in 35:57.5. Rounding out the Canisius top-five was junior Alex Simon, who finished 208th in a time of 36:04.6.

On the women's side, Canisius was led by Mulvihill for the fourth time this season, as the senior placed 128th among 243 runners with a time of 23:27.1. Following Mulvihill were the other members of the senior trio, as Jill Shea finished 173rd in 24:10.3 and Julie Dahlkemper placed 182nd in 24:20.6. Rounding out the Golden Griffins' top five on the women's side were sophomore Mikelle Cala in 186th with a time of 24:26.9 and freshman Brandi Pettit, 220th in 25:28.9.
