Senior attackman Simon
Giourmetakis of the Canisius College men's lacrosse
team was named to the MAAC All-Preseason Team on Friday. As a team, the Griffs
were selected to finish fourth in a vote of the conference's head coaches.
A first-team All-MAAC selection in 2011, Giourmetakis led
the Griffs with 34 points, 22 goals and 12 assists during his junior campaign. He
ranked second in the MAAC during conference play with 4.00 points per game and
2.67 goals per game, while placing fifth with 1.33 assists per game. A native
of Edmonton, Alberta, he also led all players in the country with a .511
shooting percentage.
During his career, Giourmetakis has appeared in 37 games on
attack and in the midfield. He has accumulated 67 points, 43 goals and 24
assists in his tenure at Canisius.
Detroit was picked first in the conference's preseason poll,
while defending champion Siena was slated second. Marist was selected right
before Canisius at third and the Griffs are followed by Jacksonville, Manhattan
and VMI in the poll.
Canisius returns six starters from the 2011 team that
finished tied for fourth in the MAAC standings with a 3-3 record.
