RIT Defeats Canisius Hockey

Rochester, N.Y. - The Canisius College hockey team lost to host RIT on Saturday night, 5-3. The Griffs are now 9-17-4 on the season and 9-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Tigers improve to 17-10-3 and 14-6-3 against league foes.

Senior Scott Moser, sophomore Kyle Gibbons and freshman Carl Larsson all scored goals for the Griffs.

Sophomore Tony Capobianco recorded 37 saves in net for Canisius.

The Tigers grabbed the lead in the contest by scoring a power-play tally with 4:41 remaining in the opening frame. Adam Hartley knocked in a rebound, giving RIT a 1-0 advantage after one.

RIT stretched its edge to two early in the second stanza when Matt Garbowsky scored on a wrap around for the 2-0 lead.

Canisius rallied back and scored two goals of its own to knot the game. Moser pulled the Griffs to within one when he netted his seventh goal of the season and his second power-play tally. The senior captain gloved the puck down and then knocked it in 5:23 into the period. Junior defender Ben Parker and freshman Doug Beck both registered an assist on the extra-man score.

The Griffs then tied the game when Gibbons netted his 11th score of the season. Freshman Cody Freeman sent a shot on goal from the boards and the rebound squirted out to Gibbons in the slot. The sophomore then beat RIT's goaltender for the 2-2 deadlock. Freshman Logan Roe also registered an assist on the goal with 4:55 remaining in the second.

The Tigers answered back just 60 seconds later, taking advantage of another power play. Greg Noyes scored with an open goal on the back door to take a 3-2 lead into the final frame.

RIT quickly took a two-goal lead in the final frame, scoring just 15 seconds into the third. Brad McGowan sent a wrist shot in from the slot for a 4-2 edge. The Tigers sealed the victory when Noyes netted a short-handed goal with 7:33 remaining in the contest.

The Griffs added a third goal on the night when Larsson scored his second goal of the season with 2:58 remaining in the game. The freshman beat the RIT netiminder glove-side high for the 5-3 final. Sophomore Duncan McKellar and Roe both registered an assist on the game's final goal.

RIT finished with a 42-32 advantage in shots on the night in the winning effort. The Tigers also converted 2-of-6 power plays, while the Griffs were 1-for-5 with the extra-man advantage. Shane Madolora stopped 29 shots in goal for RIT to earn the victory.

Canisius returns to the ice on Tuesday, hosting Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Moser's power-play goal was the first for Canisius in its last seven games and its last 26 attempts ... Gibbons is now tied with Taylor Law for the team lead with 11 goals this season ... Roe, who entered the game with one career point, posted the first multi-point game of his career with his two assists ... Canisius has lost its last seven games at Ritter Arena.
