Canisius College junior Harold Washington was
named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Second-Team Monday
afternoon on the league's annual postseason awards conference call. The
All-MAAC teams are chosen based on voting conducted by the league's 10 head
coaches.
Washington
leads the Golden Griffins in scoring with his 16.7 points per game, which ranks
fifth in the MAAC and 88th in the nation. A transfer from Cecil
College in Maryland, he scored 485 points through 29 regular-season games this
season, which stands as the most points for a Canisius player in his first year
with the program since Larry Fogle
posted 835 points for the Blue and Gold during the 1973-74 campaign. Washington
posted double figures in the scoring column 25 times and was good for 20-or
more points in a game nine times, highlighted by his career-high 30 points in
the team's win at Longwood Nov. 15.
The
Brandywine, Md., native is also averaging 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0
steals per game, while shooting 43.8 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from
3-point range and 80.3 percent from the free-throw line. Washington ranks 12th
in the MAAC in assists per game with 2.8 per outing and sixth in the league in
free-throw shooting percentage. Additionally, Washington ranks 177th
in the nation in field goal percentage and 141st in the country in
free-throw shooting percentage.
"This is a
nice honor for Harold and I couldn't be happier for a guy who brings it each
and every day," Canisius head coach Tom
Parrotta said. "Even though this is his first season with our program, he's
a veteran-type player who works hard and has an understanding of the game.
Harold would be the first guy to tell you he would not have received this award
without his teammates, and even though he's been one of our top scorers this
season, he is a guy who can drive and find the open man and he does the right
things on the glass and defensively as well."
The Griffs will get back to
action Friday, March 2, when the team opens play at the 2012 MAAC Men's
Basketball Championship against long-time rival Niagara in the MassMutual
Center in Springfield, Mass. Tipoff between Canisius and Niagara is set for
9:30 p.m. The game will not be broadcast on television or online. Jay Moran and Mike Scott will call the game live on the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network, with the M&T Bank Pregame Show set to begin at 9:15 p.m.
