The Canisius College men's lacrosse team scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back en route to an 11-7 victory against Manhattan on Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs improve to 2-3 and 1-1 in MAAC action, while the Jaspers drop to 3-5 and 0-1 against conference foes.

"We played really well today and I'm proud of our players for their effort," said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. "I thought we did an amazing job getting the ball off the faceoff, maintaining possession and our attack was able to finish their opportunities. We battled through and the team has continued to bring great energy to practice. It seems like we are just fine tuning certain parts of our game right now and today was the result we were looking for."

Senior Simon Giourmetakis led the Canisius attack with seven points, matching a career high with six goals and adding one assist. Senior Travis Gibbons netted the third hat trick of his career, while senior Jimmy Haney paced the Canisius attack with a career-best three assists.

Senior Brandon Bortignon and freshman Tim Edwards rounded out the scoring for the Griffs, netting a goal each.

Senior Sean Callahan anchored the Canisius defense with a season-best 11 saves in the win.

The Griffs took control of the game right from the start, outscoring the Jaspers 5-0 in the first quarter. Edwards gave Canisius a lead it would not relinquish with a man-up tally 3:05 into the game and was followed by two Giourmetakis tallies for a 3-0 advantage. Gibbons then netted two goals, including one with a man advantage, for the five-goal lead after 15 minutes of action.

The Jaspers finally found the back of the net with a man-up tally 29 seconds into the second frame. Manhattan added a second goal but Gibbons once again scored with the extra man off a feed from Giourmetakis to halt the Jaspers' momentum. Manhattan netted the final goal of the first half as the teams headed into the intermission with Canisius leading, 6-3.

Canisius again started the second half strong, tallying the first three goals of the third frame. Giourmetakis netted two goals and Bortignon added his first score of the season for a commanding 9-3 lead with 5:16 remaining in the third.

The Jaspers attempted a comeback, scoring the next three goals to pull within three, 9-6. However, junior Mike Moran won the ensuing faceoff and Canisius cashed in just 58 seconds later when Giourmetakis netted his fifth goal of the game. Manhattan tallied another goal but Giourmetakis then sealed the 11-7 Canisius victory with his sixth tally, coming with 65 seconds left in the game.

Manhattan held a slight advantage in shots, 31-27, with both teams winning 11 faceoffs. Canisius was 3-for-4 with the man-up advantage, while Manhattan went 1-for-3 with the extra man.

Brian McGrath led the Jaspers with three goals, while Rich Akapnitis recorded seven saves in net.

Canisius takes a break from MAAC action with a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at Robert Morris. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
