Three
Canisius College student-athletes were inducted into the Alpha Sigma Nu honor
society on Tuesday evening in Christ the King Chapel, following a reception in
the Grupp Fireside Lounge. Senior Jessica
Grogan of the synchronized swimming team, and juniors Allison Braun of the women's basketball team and Shawn Parkhurst of the men's swimming
and diving team were among the 40 inductees to the prestigious Jesuit honor
society.
Founded
in 1915, Alpha Sigma Nu is a national honor society of Jesuit institutions in
higher education. The society honors a select number of juniors, seniors and
students in graduate and professional schools, who are in the top-15 percent of
their classes, based on scholarship, loyalty and service.
In her final
season as a Griff, Grogan captured her fourth ECAC Regional Team Championship,
as the team secured its 15th consecutive title. The senior led the
Golden Griffins to the title with her first-place performance in the solo event
with a score of 85.625 points and contribution to a first-place finish in the
team event. Entering the season, she was selected among 40 swimmers from across
the nation to compete in November for a spot on the U.S. Olympic synchronized
swimming team.
Grogan currently has a 3.790 cumulative GPA, as an accounting
information systems major.
As a junior,
Braun served as team captain of the women's basketball team. This past season,
the junior appeared in 18 games, starting in 15 games before suffering a leg
injury. She led the team in assist-turnover ratio, while shooting 46.8 percent
from the field. Against Iona in the annual Kid's Day game, she hit a game-tying
baseline jumper, which allowed the Griffs to rally for a 85-74 overtime victory
over the Gaels.
An environmental studies major, Braun currently holds a 3.870
cumulative GPA. In the summer of 2011, she participated in an international
service-immersion experience with the campus ministry department in El
Salvador.
A three-time
MAAC individual champion, Parkhurst defended his title in the 1,000 freestyle
at the 2012 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championship in record-breaking fashion.
In his first-place performance, the junior set the pool, program and conference
records with a time of 9:12.43. This season, he set three individual records in
the 200 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle and 200 butterfly and was a part of four
school record-breaking relay teams.
A two-time MAAC All-Academic selection, the
physical and health education major holds a 3.740 cumulative GPA.
