Canisius junior Joe Vogl posted a one-under par round of 71 and the Golden Griffin golf team posted a combined score of 298 on the first day of the 2012 MAAC Golf Championship at Disney's Magnolia Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Vogl is currently tied for second in the tournament, as he was one of four golfers to card a score under par on Friday.

As a team, the Griffs rank third in the field with their 298, which matches the program's lowest team score in MAAC Championship play, matching the score of 298 in the second round of the 2007 conference tournament. Defending champion Loyola (Md.) leads after day one with a team score of 286, while Saint Peter's sits in second with a team tally of 291. Canisius, Fairfield (302) and Iona (303) help make up the top-five in the field, with Manhattan (311), Rider (314), Siena and Niagara (315) rounding places six through eight.

"I think this is credit to the guys coming in prepared and ready to play," Canisius head coach Todd Hummel said. "They all started off hot and that helped their confidence. Obviously, Joe Vogl played very well today and we're all looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow and playing in the final pairings."

Vogl's 71 on Friday stands as his best collegiate round, and he got the day started off right with a birdie on the par-five 10th hole. He went out in 35, which is one under par and played the back at even-par 36. Fellow junior Mike Spiotta  shot a two-over score of 74 to tie for 11th in the field and senior Stephen Seeler carded a 76 in round one to tie for 17th. Junior Michael Carrig is tied for 21st after he shot a 77 on the 7,008 course.

The second round of the three-day event in Florida will tee off at 7:30 a.m., on Saturday, with the Canisius contingent hitting the first tee at 9:10 a.m.
