Canisius
College baseball player Devon Stewart has been named a Louisville Slugger
Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Stewart is the third
Golden Griffin to receive the honor in the last six years as Ian Choy (2007)
and Shane Davis (2008) have previously earned the accolades.
The 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Stewart made 15 starts during the 2012 season, going 6-4 with a 3.80 earned run average
in 94.2 innings pitched (most in program history by a freshman), including
three complete games. Stewart led MAAC freshmen in ERA, innings pitched, starts
and strikeouts (60) while tying for the lead in victories. He was one of two players in the MAAC, along with
teammate Billy Martin, to make 15
starts in 2012. Stewart went at least six innings in 12 of 15 starts and
allowed three or fewer earned runs in 11 starts.
Stewart
went eight innings in the winners' bracket game of the 2012 MAAC Championship
as he earned the win in a 10-3 victory over Rider University. The 6-foot-2
righty allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out seven against the Broncs.
Stewart threw a seven-inning shutout of Iona College on May 5, allowing one Gael
to reach third base, retiring 13 of the last 14 batters and throwing a
first-pitch strike to 20 of the 27 batters he faced. Stewart also had nine
strikeouts against Penn State on April 7, the most strikeouts by a Golden
Griffin freshman since the 2000 season.
Stewart
was the only player from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to earn
Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball.
