GOLF OPENS 2012 FALL SEASON AT TURNING STONE

• The Canisius College golf team will open the 2012 fall season Sept. 2-3, at the fourth annual Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate event in Verona, N.Y.
• The Golden Griffins' roster features some familiar faces with three seniors and plenty of newcomers, with four freshmen.
• Seniors Michael Carrig, Mike Spiotta, and Joe Vogl return for their final seasons in Blue and Gold. Between the senior trio, they have played in a combined 67 college events.
• Freshmen Andrew Romano, Brendan Polsin and Hunter Sagar will also be in the field on the Kaluhyat Course. This will be the first college action for all three of those players. Freshman Zachary Soccio-Marandola is also on this year's roster.
• This marks the third time in the last four years Canisius has opened the season at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. The Griffs played in the first event in 2009 and then again in 2010.

HUMMEL EXCITED TO START 2012-13

• Coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2012 MAAC Golf Championships last May, Canisius head coach Todd Hummel is excited about his team's outlook for this year.
• Hummel believes starting at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate is a great way to get the year rolling. "Any time you can come off the summer season and play a few top-100 teams at one of the highest-rated courses in New York state, you have to be excited and ready to go," he said.
• With a seven-man roster featuring three seniors and four freshmen, Hummel said, "Our seniors are our leaders and they will set the tone. Those other four guys are going to learn the college game for the seniors. Our freshmen class is as good as any I've had the chance to bring in here to Canisius. They have a wealth of playing at high levels, both regionally and nationally."

ON THE NEXT TEE

• Canisius will have a very quick turnaround after finishing on Monday, as the team will look to defend its Little Three Golf Championship Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Harvest Hill Golf Course in Orchard Park, N.Y.
• The Griffs have won the Little Three event in each of the last two years, the first time the Blue and Gold has claimed the crown in back-to-back years since besting Niagara and St. Bonaventure in 1956 and then again in 1957.
• The 36-hole event will tee off at 8 a.m. The individual medalist for this year's Little Three will once again earn an automatic berth into the 2013 Porter Cup, which is considered to be one of the top amateur golf tournaments in the United States.
