Canisius College senior golfer Michael Carrig shot back-to-back rounds of 71 and wrapped up day one of the Fourth Annual Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in fourth place with a 36-hole score of 142 as the Golden Griffins opened the 2012-13 season at the Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y. As a team, the Blue and Gold sit in ninth place after the first two rounds with a team score of 602.

Carrig, who had just one round under par last season, came out firing to become the first Canisius golfer to register consecutive rounds under par in over a decade. Fellow senior Mike Spiotta and freshman Hunter Sagar are tied for 42nd in the field after each player carded a two-round tally of 153. Freshman Andrew Romano shot 76-79 for a 155 in his first two collegiate rounds, which ranks him tied for 48th in the field of 73 players.

As a team, Canisius closed out the first two rounds in ninth place with a combined score of 602, which leaves the team nine strokes behind fifth-place IPFW (593) and just four back of eighth-place Cleveland State (598). The host Missouri Tigers lead the team event with a score of 559. Missouri's Jace Long leads the field with a 36-hole score of 132, which is 12-under par, after he torched the course with a pair of rounds at 66.

The third and final round of the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate will tee off at 8 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 3.
