Canisius College head softball coach Mike Rappl announced today that juniors Jen Consaul and Valorie Nappo have been named team captains for the 2012-13 season.
"Both Jen and Valorie are extremely dedicated to this program and they both understand what it takes to lead this program," Rappl said. "They both demonstrate a great work ethic, whether it is on the field, in the weight room or in the classroom, and they are respected by their teammates."
Consaul led the 2012 pitching staff with her nine wins in the circle and posted a 2.86 ERA in 31 appearances during her sophomore campaign. She had 10 complete-games last season and boasted two saves as well. In 139.1 innings of work last year, she recorded four shutouts and fanned a career-high 10 batters against Mount St. Mary's in the 2012 home opener. In her rookie season of 2011, the Chili, N.Y., native went 8-3 with three saves and eight complete games. Her three saves was tops in the MAAC and ranked 31st nationally.
Nappo played in and started all 50 games for the Griffs at first base in 2012, where she hit .240 with a double, two home runs and 13 runs knocked in. She had six multi-hit games last season and hit her first career homer in the team's win on the road at Saint Peter's April 20. As a freshman in 2011, she played in 38 game, making 36 starts, and hit 272 with 10 doubles, eight runs scored and eight RBIs. A native of Clarence, N.Y., she was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for her work in the classroom at the end of the 2012 season.
The Golden Grffins will open their fall schedule Sept. 15-16 when the program hosts the 24th annual Canisius-Nan Harvey Fall Classic at the Northtown Center in Amherst, N.Y. Canisius is scheduled to play two games Sept. 15, meeting long-time rival Niagara at 11:30 a.m., before taking on St. Bonaventure at 1:30 p.m.
