The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2012-13 season at the Western New York Invitational on Saturday at the Alumni Arena Natatorium hosted by the University at Buffalo. In the non-scoring meet, the Golden Griffins competed against Big Four rivals UB, St. Bonaventure, and Niagara.
The host Bulls captured 28 of the 34 day's events, while St. Bonaventure took five and Canisius one. Niagara did not win an event on either the men's or women's events.
The Golden Griffins' lone event winner was newcomer Clare Battaglia. The freshman finished first in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.95. For the day, Battaglia also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.28 and fifth in the 200-yard IM in 2:13.73.
In addition to Battaglia's strong performance in the pool for the Golden Griffin women, freshman Audrey Mulhisen and sophomore Taylor Epstein had strong efforts on the diving board. Mulhisen placed third in both the one-meter event with 200.80 points and the three-meter event with a total score of 214.05. Epstein recorded fourth-place finishes in both the one-meter with 185.00 points and the three-meter with 189.80 total points.
On the men's side, senior Shawn Parkhurst recorded three top-five finishes for the team's best performance on the day. Parkhurst placed third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.51, fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.79, and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.13.
The Golden Griffins men and women combined for 40 top-ten finishes in the 34 events with the men accounting for 21 and the women collecting 19.
The Blue and Gold will travel to MAAC opponent Marist to open their dual schedule on Saturday, Oct. 20 at noon.
