The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open dual action against MAAC opponent Marist on Satruday afternoon. The Golden Griffins and Red Foxes have created a sort of rivalry between the two since the Griffs' second-place finish at the 2012 MAAC Championship when the Griffs defeated the Red Foxes by 2.5 points.
Entering the final event of the 400-freestyle relay, the Golden Griffin men were only 1.5 points out of second-place Marist with 555.5 points. The relay team of former Griff Steve Pochatko, and current seniors Shawn Parkhurst and Matt Moessinger, and current sophomore Nick Sereday posted a school record time of 3:05.77, leading the men to their second-place finish over the Red Foxes.
Earlier in the season, the two teams met in a dual for the first time in program history. In the "home" dual at the ECC Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo, N.Y., the Golden Griffins split the dual with the Red Foxes. The men defeated the visiting Red Foxes by the score of 165-135, while the women fell to Marist, 179-118.
In the MAAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Preseason Coaches Poll, the Red Fox men were selected to finish second with the Golden Griffins chosen to finish third. On the women's side, reigning MAAC Champion Marist was chosen to repeat their title with the Golden Griffin women selected to finish fifth overall.
As a perennial power in the MAAC, Marist has secured a combined 20 conference titles. The Marist women have captured eight of the last nine conference titles, while the men have finished as one of the top-three teams since they joined in 1996. In that span, the men have claimed 12 conference titles.
