The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their dual schedules at MAAC opponent Marist, being swept in both duals at the McCann Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes and Golden Griffins met in a dual for the second time in program history with the Red Fox men defeating the Griffs by the score of 171-121 and the reigning women's MAAC champion Marist taking a 182-113 victory over the visiting Griffs.

"We had a lot of great swims, but failed to do some of the little things right," said head coach Scott Vanderzell. "We know that we can't make mistake when you swim conference meets."

For the second straight race, freshman Clare Battaglia won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.30. In addition, the freshman secured a first-place finish of 2:09.35 in the 100-yard backstroke.

Also, securing a first-place finish was freshman Alex Doody, recording a time of 2:30.87.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior Tyler Carver (1:00.98) and sophomore Sam Hansen (1:01.88) placed first and second, respectively. Hansen would go on to win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.65) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:06.14).

Sophomore Sean Wurster locked up a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.75.

Making their debut in MAAC action, the newcomers performed well for each squad. On the women's side, Battaglia and Doody accounted for three first-place finishes. For the men, the sophomore class stepped up, as Hansen and Wurster secured top-finishes in three combined events.

"Clare, Alex, Austin Hill, and Spencer Bray came to race and it was nice to see them swim with confidence in their first MAAC competition," said Vanderzell.

The Blue and Gold will next host Big Four rival St. Bonaventure on Friday in their home opener at the Koessler Athletic Center Pool with the dual beginning at 4 p.m.
