The Binghamton University men's and
women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Buffalo and swept Canisius
College on Sunday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center pool, with the
Bearcats winning on the men's side by a score of 199-101 and in the women's
event by a final tally of 191-109.
The Golden Griffins' 200-yard medley
relay team of Shawn Parkhurst, Tyler Carver, Sean Stegmoller and Nick
Sereday set a new pool record in the day's second event, as the Griffs won
that race with a final time of 1:36.23, besting the previous record by .43
seconds. Individually, Parkhurst also set the pool record in the men's 200
butterfly with his time of 1:52.55, 1.74 seconds faster than the previous pool
record set by St. Bonaventure's Elias Homerin earlier this season. On the
women's side, Canisius freshman Clare
Battaglia set a new Koessler pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with
her time of 1:00:12, which was .38 seconds faster than the previous pool mark,
which was set in 2008-09.
"This was a chance for us to get our
team to compete in the events they will be swimming at the MAAC Championships
in February," Canisius head coach Scott
Vanderzell said. "I thought we did a pretty good job today despite the
score. This was a good chance for us to learn some things in races and
understand some of the smaller points that will be crucial toward our success
when we get to the conference championships in a few months."
In the men's event, Carver won the
100-yard breaststroke race with his time of 59.40, and Parkhurst won the 200
butterfly with his pool record time. Carver took second in the 200-yard
breaststroke race, while freshman Spencer
Bray and sophomore Sean Wurster
took second and third place respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Parkhurst
also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 51.75, just .07
seconds behind race winner Tim Cabasion from Binghamton.
In the men's diving events,
sophomore Eddie Quarantillo placed
third in the 3-meter diving competition with his score of 244.35, while juniors
Joel Kowalski and Jake Kowalski took fourth and fifth. In
the 1-meter, Quarantillo also placed second with his score 259.71.
Battaglia won two events on Sunday,
as she posted the top time in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke
races. She also placed second in the 200-yard IM, .37 seconds behind winner
Lauren Flower from Binghamton. Sophomore Marissa
Oakey placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard
freestyle, while junior teammate Anna
Schena placed second in the 1,000-yard free and 500-yard free events. Junior
Kelli Graber finished second in the
50-yard freestlye and third in the 100-yard freestyle race.
Freshman diver Audrey Mulhisen won both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving
competitions for the Blue and Gold, as she posted 215.70 points in the 3-meter
event before scoring 219.52 in the 1-meter. Sophomore Taylor Epstein placed second behind Mulhisen in the 3-meter with
her score of 208.42 and she took third-place honors in the women's 1-meter with
her score of 207.52.
Both the Canisius men's and women's
swimming and diving teams will be back in action Tuesday, Dec. 4, when the
Griffs travel to take part in another dual meet at Cleveland State. Action is
set to begin at 4 p.m.
