Junior forward Brianna Smith of the Canisius College women's soccer team was selected the All-WNY Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, as announced by the staff of Upper 90 Magazine on Friday. Smith earned one of the forward spots on the All-WNY First Team with sophomore back Jenny Piaggione being named a second-team selection.
For the second time in her career, Smith was named All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference First Team. Starting in 14 games for the Griffs, the junior led the team in six offensive categories. Smith occupied the top spot in goals (11), points (22), shots (57), shot percentage (.193), shots on goal (30), and game-winning goals (3). The Buffalo, N.Y. native moved into the school's top-10 list in both career points and goals, sliding into seventh place in most career points (64) and fourth in career goals (29).
In addition to the conference honor, Smith was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against Saint Peter's and Manhattan during the weekend of Oct. 12. She scored game-winning goals in both contests, including her first career hat trick against Saint Peter's to lead the Griffs.
Named to the MAAC All-Academic Team, Piaggione started in 16 of the 17 contests she appeared in this season. She finished the season with three points, including a goal and an assist. On Sept. 23, Piaggione assisted on the game-winning goal against Duquesne for her first career point. The back also scored her first career goal on Sept. 7 versus Albany to record her first collegiate points.
