This week has been super exciting for all of the Griffs as fans of NHL hockey. I think I speak for everyone in saying that I forgot just how much I really missed watching hockey until the lockout ended and the first games were played last weekend.

Another exciting part about the return of the NHL is that ex-Griff Cory Conacher made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning and to date has five points through three games. A good number of us never played with Cory but nevertheless, it has been great to watch a former Griff in the NHL.

The most excited person around the rink these days about the return of the NHL is our equipment manager, Jack Markwardt. Jack is the most die-hard Buffalo Sabres fan I have ever met and his Sabres beat my Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. Jack loves the Sabres so much that when he tells me that he thinks that the Sabres will win the cup this year, he actually believes it.

When I say that I think this is the year for the Leafs, I'm really just trying to "stir-the-pot" in the dressing room over such a ridiculous statement. I guess in a way it's alright if Jack wins the odd bet with me... I wouldn't want him butchering my skates in anger over a Sabres loss to the Leafs.

Another huge plus that comes with the start of the NHL season is Hockey Night in Canada. For us Canadians, its been a huge luxury to get CBC in our houses so that we can watch Coaches Corner with Don Cherry and Ron McLean after the first period of the Leafs game. It's pretty funny to watch an American's reactions to Cherry's pro-Canadian statements. My roommate Doug Beck quite possibly hates Don Cherry more than anyone, however, I make sure he keeps quiet for the whole show.

Last weekend, we traveled to Bentley where we lost two tough games. I actually managed to make it through the weekend without vomiting on the bench in the middle of the game... like I did the week before. I apologize to everyone who had to witness that and to you readers who may have a weak stomach.

This week is Griffin Week where everyone shows their support for Griffin athletics. We travel to Mercyhurst on Friday before playing them again on Saturday, this time at home. I would like to close by saying good luck to all the Griffin teams in action this week and we look forward to your support on Saturday at Buffalo State.

Until next time, keep it simple,
Braeden Rigney and Ben Parker
