Continuing right where she left off last season, senior
midfielder Morgan Leonard of the Canisius College women's lacrosse team was named MAAC Defensive
Player of the Week on Monday.
The reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Leonard
collected seven caused turnovers against No. 16 Cornell on Saturday. Her seven
caused turnovers are the most in her career and just one shy of the school
record. She also added five points, four goals and one assist against the
nationally-ranked Big Red.
Through two games of the 2013 campaign, Leonard leads the
Griffs with five points, four goals, 10 caused turnovers and eight ground
balls. Her 10 caused turnovers are the most in the country this season and she
is tied for first nationally with 5.00 caused turnovers per game. She also
places 14th in the country with 4.00 ground balls per game.
The Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, Leonard collected
first-team all-conference honors in addition to her Defensive Player of the
Year accolades from last season. She totaled 39 points, 29 goals, 10 assists,
40 caused turnovers, 45 ground balls and 37 draw controls. The Sykesville, Md.
native led the MAAC and ranked seventh nationally with 2.11 caused turnovers
per game.
The weekly accolade is the third for Leonard during her
career.
Leonard and the Griffs return to action on Saturday, playing
at Binghamton. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
