Softball Moves to 7-1 With a Pair of Wins

The Canisius College softball team improved to 7-1 on the year by winning two games on the final day of the North Carolina A&T Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. The Golden Griffins, who have now won five straight, defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 9-3 before taking care of UMES by the score of 7-4.

The team's current five-game winning streak is the longest for the program since the team won five-straight games from March 13-19, 2011. Canisius scored four early runs in the win over St. Francis (Pa.) (1-4) and then held a 7-1 lead heading into the seventh against UMES (3-3) before posting the 7-4 victory.

Junior Jen Consaul earned her team-leading fourth win of the season in the circle in the win over St. Francis (Pa.), her third win of the road trip, and senior Amanda Baun improved to 3-0 on the season for the Blue and Gold after she threw six innings and allowed just one run on three hits while fanning four in the nightcap.

Canisius will return to action March 8-9 at the Hampton Pirate Invitational in Hampton, Va. The Griffs are scheduled to play Delaware and Central Connecticut State on March 8.

GAME ONE
The Griffs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over St. Francis (Pa.) and never looked back en route to the team's second win over the Red Flash in the last two days. Sophomore Michelle DelPrince got the scoring started with a triple to center that allowed freshman Meghan Cuda to score, and DelPrince would cross the plate moments later to make it 2-0 on an RBI-double by junior Valorie Nappo. Valorie's younger sister Tori Nappo drove in two runs to make it 4-0 in favor of Canisius with an RBI-double of her own that allowed senior Stephanie Pfentner and Valorie Nappo to cross the dish.

Leading 4-2 through four innings, Canisius scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth frames, with sophomore Robin Kennery driving in two runs in the sixth when she was credited with a double to straight-away center field. In the seventh, Canisius sophomore Marissa Miller hit her first homer of the season over the fence in center to add an insurance tally for the Griffs.

The nine runs were more than enough for Consaul, who improved to 4-1 on the year after she went the distance and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking three. Valorie Nappo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Tori Nappo added two hits and two runs batted in as well. Canisius racked up 10 hits as a team in the game one victory, with Kennery also recordng two hits and two runs knocked in as well.

GAME TWO
Canisius scored three times in the third and broke the game open with three runs in the sixth for the 7-4 win over UMES. Pfentner went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Kennery added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored to the winning cause. DelPrince had a hit, two runs scored and two stolen bases for Canisius, which posted 12 hits as a team en route to the seventh win of the 2013 campaign.

Baun improved to 3-0 in her senior season after she fanned four and allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of work. The win for Baun was the 29th in her career as a Griff.
