A strong defensive effort, led by senior captain Lindsey Morgan, led the Canisius College women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 win over Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. The win is the first for the Griffs during the 2103 campaign as the team improves to 1-2, while the Bearcats drop to 0-3.

Morgan led the Canisius defensive effort, matching a school record with eight caused turnovers. The senior also added three points, two goals, one assist, four ground balls and two draw controls.

"Today, we played mentally tough for a full 60 minutes," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "Our defense was rock solid and our team leaders really did a good job showing the way. Lindsay Morgan, Maria Kotas and Taylor Smith all played really great today."

Junior Maria Kotas led the Griffs on the offensive end, recording a career-best six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Tori Quinn added four points on two goals and two assists, while senior Meghan McGunigle also netted two scores.

Senior Morgan Leonard, sophomore Tori Greco and freshman Caroline Ogden rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each.

Sophomore Kayla Scully recorded seven saves to earn the victory in goal.

The Bearcats struck first in the contest, scoring 4:24 into the game. However, Binghamton would not find the back of the net for the remainder of the opening half as Canisius built its lead. Kotas evened the game just 69 seconds following the Binghamton goal and after 13 minutes of scoreless action, Leonard gave the Griffs the lead for good with her fifth goal of the season.

Morgan, Quinn and Kotas then all added goals as Canisius headed into the intermission with a 5-1 lead. The Griffs held the Bearcats without a score for the final 25:36 of the opening half, while limiting Binghamton to just four shots in the first 30 minutes of action. Overall, Canisius forced Binghamton into 12 turnovers in 16 first-half possessions, six of them forced by Morgan.

The Bearcats finally ended their 28:21 scoring drought with a tally early in the second half but Canisius would not allow the team to get any closer than that. The Griffs sealed their first victory of the 2013 season with a 6-0 run en route to the 13-7 win.

Canisius outshot the Bearcats, 32-17, and held a 28-13 advantage in ground balls. Angela Vespa led Binghamton with three goals, while Erin McNulty and Kara Pafumi combined to make 13 saves.

The Griffs return to action on Wednesday with a road contest against Robert Morris. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
