Nationally-ranked Ohio State broke open a tight game at the half with a dominating second period to earn a 16-5 victory against the Canisius College women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Griffs to 2-3 on the season, while the 15th-ranked Buckeyes improve to 3-3.

"We played great for 30 minutes but unfortunately the game is 60 minutes," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter.

Senior Morgan Leonard and junior Maria Kotas each led the Griffs with two goals in the loss with sophomore Tori Quinn adding a goal and an assist.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the contest with a goal less than four minutes into the contest but the Griffs responded by keeping Ohio State off the scoreboard for the next 14 minutes and tallying two goals of their own. Quinn and Leonard both netted goals as Canisius took a 2-1 lead. Ohio State answered back with a 4-1 run before Leonard finished the scoring in the first half with her second of the day with just 42 seconds left.

Ohio State headed into the intermission with a 5-4 lead with shots even at 13 in the opening 30 minutes of action.

The second half was much different as the Buckeyes dominated the second 30 minutes of play to run away with the win. Ohio State scored the first four goals of the second stanza in just over five minutes of action before Canisius even had the ball in its offensive zone. Overall, the Buckeyes outscored Canisius, 11-1, in the second half and held a 23-5 advantage in shots. In fact, Canisius got off only five shots after the intermission, while committing 11 turnovers.

Overall, Ohio State outshot the Griffs, 36-18, in the win and held a commanding 17-6 advantage in draw controls. Jackie Cifarelli (1g, 5a) and Cara Facchina (4g, 2a) led the Buckeyes with six points each.

Canisius returns to Buffalo for its next game when the Griffs host Long Island on Thursday. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
