Hobart held the Canisius College men's lacrosse team without a goal for the final 20-plus minutes of the game, turning an 8-8 contest into a 12-8 win for the Statesmen on Tuesday night. The Griffs are now 0-5 on the season, while Hobart improves to 4-2.

"In a very physical game, we improved in some areas, like clears and penalties, but fell short in others," said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. "Although we got dominated on loose balls and shots, we had chances to win. Going 3-for-11 on the power play is not good enough and we have to do a better job capitalizing. We feel that we are still trying to find the right mix and we need to pull it all together quickly as conference play starts on Saturday."

Freshman Vince Gravino led Canisius with a career-best four points on the night, netting his first collegiate hat trick to go along with one assist. Senior Joe Rautenstrauch also tallied a personal best with two goals, while sophomore Austin Romantic chipped in two scores of his own. Sophomore Jake Giarrano rounded out the scoring for Canisius with his first career goal.

Sophomore Tim Edwards paced the Canisius attack with three assists on the night, while also leading the team at the faceoff X by winning 6-of-9 restarts.

Sophomore Alex Govenettio recorded 12 saves to anchor the Canisius defense.

Gravino gave the Griffs the early lead with a man-up tally 3:40 into the contest only to see Hobart's Alex Love score the next two goals for the Statesmen's first lead of the night, 2-1. Rautenstrauch tied the game for Canisius with 35 ticks left in the first and Romantic then helped the Griffs reclaim the advantage, 3-2, 2:36 into the second.

Love then continued his strong performance, starting a 3-0 Hobart run with two more goals to give the Statesmen a 5-3 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Canisius, however, finished the second quarter strong with Romantic ending the Hobart run and Gravino netting two more man-up goals for a 6-5 Griffs lead at the half.

Hobart scored the first two goals after the break to take the lead back but Giarrano knotted the contest up at seven with his first collegiate goal with 7:28 remaining in the third. The Statesmen reclaimed their lead just 26 seconds later but Rautenstrauch once again tied the game at eight with 5:42 left in the period.

Canisius, however, would not find the back of the net for the remainder of the contest. Hobart scored two goals in the final two minutes of the third quarter and then added two more tallies in the fourth for the 12-8 final. Overall, the Griffs did not score in the final 20:42 of action, committing seven turnovers with only five shots during the scoring drought.

Hobart finished the contest with a 47-29 advantage in shots and a 12-10 edge in faceoffs. Canisius committed 14 turnovers with only seven for the Statesmen. Hobart also nearly doubled the Griffs in ground balls, collecting 35 to only 18 for Canisius.

Love finished with a game-high six goals for the Statesmen with Peter Zonino recording nine saves in the win.

Canisius now turns its attention toward conference play, opening its MAAC schedule on Saturday at VMI. The two schools are set to meet in Lexington, Va. with game time slated for 1 p.m.
