Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away From Monmouth

Box Score

The Canisius women's lacrosse team scored the first six goals of the second half to take control of the game en route to a 14-9 win over Monmouth University at the Demske Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won for the fifth time in the last six games and improve to 5-3 on the season.

Seniors Lindsey Morgan and Morgan Leonard each scored four goals for the Griffs. Sophomore Tori Quinn led all players with six points (three goals and three assists) and also had four draw controls. Freshman Caroline Ogden added four points, including three assists.

"We had a great start to both halves, but give credit to Monmouth as they battled back and we weren't able to put the game away early," Canisius coach Scott Teeter said. "We need to learn in a hurry to value the ball, or it is going to cost us."

Morgan scored the first four goals of the game in the opening 11 minutes. On her first goal, Morgan cut to the net and took a pass from junior Maria Kotas. Quinn assisted Morgan on the next two goals, with the third tally coming on a shot into the lower corner. Leonard added two goals for the Griffs, putting Canisius up 6-2 midway through the first half. Monmouth (2-6) scored the next four goals to tie the game at 6-6 late in the first half before a free-position goal from Quinn with 2:49 broke the tie and sent Canisius into the locker room up 7-6.

That goal from Quinn sparked a seven-goal spurt for the Griffs as Canisius broke the game open. Quinn had three goals an assist during the run, including a pass to sophomore Whitley Perry who extended her stick to catch the pass, gathered her feet and finished to put Canisius up 11-6. Kotas and Leonard closed out the run for the Griffs who held Monmouth scoreless for more than 19 minutes.

Sophomore Kayla Scully earned the win for the Griffs, making nine saves on 16 shots faced to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Canisius continues its five-game homestand on Monday, when the Golden Griffins host St. Bonaventure. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m.
