Marist scored 11 goals in the second half to defeat the Canisius men’s lacrosse team 13-5 at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday night. The Golden Griffins fall to 1-6 oveall and 1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

"We were successful in the first half with our game plan, and we knew they would make some adjustments but we couldn't adjust quickly enough and didn't perform in that second half," Canisius coach Randy Mearns said. "We have to battle when things aren't going our way in the second half, and I was disappointed in how the game ended.

"We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and change our play in the second half of games. It takes 60 minutes to win against quality opponents, and we have to learn that lesson."

Canisius scored the first two goals of the game just over three minutes into the contest. Freshman Vince Gravino tallied his first of three goals on the day off an assist from sophomore Tim Edwards. The Griffs went up 2-0 on an unassisted goal from sophomore Austin Romantic at the 11:48 mark. Marist would tie the game at 2-2 by scoring the next two goals before the Griffs reclaimed a two-goal lead. Gravino scored his second of the day late in the first quarter and senior Joe Rautenstrauch scored late in the second quarter off an assist from Gravino to take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.

Marist would score the next six goals, including three goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter. Joseph Radin tallied back-to-back goals and Connor Rice got his first of two goals to give Marist a 5-4 lead. The Red Foxes got a goal from Jack Doherty late in the third quarter and took a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Red Foxes scored the first two goals of the third quarter to go up 8-4 before Gravino scored his third goal of the day to make it 8-5 with 11:39 left. Marist then scored the final five goals of the game to close out the scoring.

Sophomore Alex Govenettio made 10 saves in the loss for the Griffs while Dave Scarcello had 10 saves in the win for Marist.

Canisius returns to the field on Friday, when the Golden Griffins play at No. 4 Syracuse. Game time at the Carrier Dome is set for 7 p.m.
