Senior Christian Segar was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week while freshman Alex Godzak was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Segar hit .643 (9-for-14) with five runs scored, five RBI and five steals, leading Canisius in all four categories as the Golden Griffins posted four wins last week. The senior outfielder recorded four multi-hit games in his four starts and also posted at least one run scored, one hit and one RBI in each of the four contests. Segar reached base in 13 of his 19 plate appearances, scored the game-tying run in a mid-week win over Buffalo and game-winning run in the series opener at Iona.
Godzak threw seven no-hit innings as part of the first Division I, nine-inning no-hitter in program history in an 8-0 win over Iona College on Friday afternoon. Godzak overcame walks to the second and third batters of the game before retiring the next 20 batters he faced as the Syracuse, N.Y. native also struck out six in his seven innings of work. The 5-foot-9 lefty combined with sophomore Rohn Pierce and junior Jon Fitzsimmons to no-hit the Gaels, the first no-hitter by Canisius since 1993.
Canisius has had a league-best six players earn weekly awards from the conference office this season, twice as many as any other school in the MAAC. The six players have claimed a total of seven awards, including three Player of the Week, one Pitcher of the Week and three Rookie of the Week awards.
Canisius returns to the field for a doubleheader at Cornell University on Wednesday. First pitch in Ithaca, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.
