Golf Places 12th at Towson Invitational

The Canisius College golf team shot a team score of 315 on Tuesday in the final round of the Whiting-Turner Tiger Invitational and placed 12th out of 24 teams with a three-day score of 943. The Golden Griffins improved 10 spots on the team scoreboard from round one to round three in their first event of the 2013 spring season, which was played at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.

Canisius freshman Andrew Romano shot a final round 80 to post a 54-hole total of 233, which tied him for 30th in the field. Senior Michael Carrig led the way for the Blue and Gold on Tuesday with a 77. He tied for 66th overall. Fellow senior Mike Spiotta posted a three-day score of 237 to tie for 46th while freshman Hunter Sagar tied for 58th with his tournament score of 239.

"I'm pretty pleased with the scores in this final round, especially with the tough conditions out there today," Canisius head coach Todd Hummel said. "We didn't finish too far from fifth place after a rough start on day one. I'm happy with the way the guys battled back, especially since this was our first tournament of the spring in a pretty competitive field with a lot of quality teams. This is a solid start to our spring season."

William & Mary won the team title with a team score of 888. Loyola (Md.) took second after the Greyhounds shot 913, followed by Rutgers (914), IUP (918) and Central Connecticut State (931). William & Mary golf Jeremy Wells won individual honors after he posted a tournament score of 216, which was even-par for the 54-hole event.

Canisius will return to action April 6-7 at the Rhody Invitational in Portsmouth, R.I.
