The Canisius College softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday as the Golden Griffins were swept in a non-league doubleheader at College of Charleston. The host Cougars took game one 11-0 in five innings before posting a 7-0 victory in the nightcap. College of Charleston is now 17-15 on the season while Canisius slipped to 12-10 on the year.
The Cougars scored three runs in the home half of the first and never looked back in the victory. Canisius starter Jen Consaul allowed 11 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits to go with four strikeouts and four walks in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Valorie Nappo had a double in the loss and freshman Meghan Cuda added a base hit to the Griffs' effort as the Blue and Gold posted just two hits against winning pitcher Hope Klicker, who moved to 10-7 with the win after she struck out six and walked just one in five innings.
In the second game, College of Charleston led 1-0 through three innnings, but the home squad broke the game open with a pair of runs in the fourth and a four-run fifth frame, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Kristy Giragosian. Senior Katie Medina had three hits, including a double in the fourth inning, but Canisius failed to advance a base runner to third in the losing effort.
Senior pitcher Amanda Baun allowed seven runs on seven hits while fanning four and walking three in 4.2 innings of work. College of Charleston starter Stephanie Saylors earned the win, her seventh of the season, after she tossed her second shutout of the year while striking out four.
Canisius will return to action Wednesday, April 3, when the team plays at Charleston Southern in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
