Softball Ends Losing Streak with Scoring Outburst

The Canisius College softball team put an end to its four-game losing streak by routing Charleston Southern 12-2 in five innings Wednesday afternoon at CSU Softball Field in Charleston, S.C. The Golden Griffins moved to 13-12 on the year with the win and scored 10 or more runs in a game for the sixth time this season in the victory.

After Charleston Southern took game one of the non-league doubleheader by a score of 13-0 in five innings, the host Bucaneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning in game two. Those two runs woke up the Griffs' bats, as the Blue and Gold proceeded to score a total of 11 runs through the next three innings en route to the win.

Canisius freshman Meghan Cuda ended the second game of the day by going 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two walks, six RBIs and two runs scored while fellow freshman Alexis Roman drove in a pair of runs as well for Canisius. Senior Katie Medina had three hits, including a double, and scored three times and sophomore Michelle DelPrince scored three runs as well.

Trailing 2-0 after the first, Canisius knotted the game at 2-2 in the top half of the second after Cuda ripped a two-run triple to right. Canisius took the lead for good moments later when Cuda scored on an RBI-single by Roman. The Griffs added four runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead after the Blue and Gold sent 10 batters to the plate. In the fourth, Canisius tacked on four more runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Cuda.

Freshman Bethany DeMarco scored two runs and knocked in a run in the win, while junior Valorie Nappo added an RBI as well. Junior pitcher Jen Consaul picked up her ninth win of the season for the Griffs after she went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three.

The team's 12-run outburst ended a streak of 23-straight innings where the Blue and Gold failed to score a run. Canisius lost the first game of the day at Charleston Southern (7-32) by a 13-0 count in five innings after the Griffs posted three hits. Cuda, DeMarco and Roman each had base hits for Canisius in the losing effort.

The Griffs return to action Saturday, April 6, when the team opens MAAC play at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
