Canisius senior Mike Spiotta shot a six-over par 78 and freshman Hunter Sagar carded a 79 in the first round of the 2013 Wolfpack Spring Open, hosted by NC State in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday. As a team, Canisius shot 319, which ranks 13th in the field.
Starting on the back nine, Spiotta came out of the gate on fire, posting birdie on the par-4 10th hole. He was even through 10 holes before finishing the round with his 78. Sagar went out in 42, but rebounded to shoot a score of 37 on the front nine, highlighted by his birdie-2 at the par-3 eighth hole.
Canisius senior Michael Carrig shot an 80 in the first round, which is led by Clemson's Miller Capps and Duke golfer Brinson Paolini, which share the lead after a first-round score of 67, which is five-under par.
The Duke Blue Devils, which entered this event ranked 10th in the nation, shot a team score of 286, three strokes better than No. 41 ranked NC State. No. 26 Clemson is in third at 291, while St. John's and Francis Marion round out the top five in the field.
The second and final round of the Wolfpack Spring Open is set for Sunday, April 21. Canisius golfers are set to start off the tee at 8:27 a.m.
