Softball Falls Twice at Fairfield

The Canisius softball team saw its losing streak reach six straight as the Golden Griffins fell twice on the road to Fairfield Sunday afternoon in MAAC action. The Stags took game one by the score of 3-1 and then the host squad won the nightcap by a 5-1 count. Fairfield is now 24-18 overall and 10-4 in MAAC play while Canisius slipped to 21-22 overall and 6-8 in league play.

GAME ONE - Fairfield 3, Canisius 1
Fairfield scored three times in the bottom of the third and starting pitcher Rae Ball scattered five hits over seven innings to go with three strikeouts as Fairfield defeated Canisius 3-1 in the first game of the day. Canisius advanced just one runner to third base through the game's first six innings, but the Blue and Gold ended Ball's bid at a shutout when freshman Meghan Cuda doubled in the seventh to knock fellow freshman Alexis Roman across the plate. Canisius had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh, but Ball locked in and got the two final outs to secure the win.

Roman had two hits in the loss and scored a run, while Cuda posted a double and an RBI for Canisius. Canisius senior Amanda Baun took the loss after she allowed three runs on three hits, while fanning six.

GAME TWO - Fairfield 5, Canisius 1
Fairfield scored three times in the home half of the third inning and pitcher Rebecca Trott allowed one run on three hits in seven innings as Fairfield extended its home regular-season win streak to 12 straight with a 5-1 win in game two of the MAAC twinbill.

Canisius trailed 3-0 in the fifth before pinch-runner Chloe Contreras crossed the plate on a Fairfield error to make the score 3-1. The Stags answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to push the score to 5-1. Those runs were enough for Trott, who earned her 10th win of the season for Fairfield.

Valorie Nappo, Robin Kennery and Bethany DeMarco all picked up hits in the loss, while Fairfield's Kristen Filicia went 3-for-4 in the win. Canisius junior pitcher Jen Consaul took the loss after she allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits with four walks.

Canisius will return to action May 1, at Colgate. The non-league doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m., in Hamilton, N.Y.
