Freshman Alex Godzak (Syracuse, N.Y.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. Godzak wins the award for the second time this season.
In the middle game of the weekend series against Marist, Godzak went 7.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking two and striking out seven. Of the 23 outs recorded by the 5-foot-9 freshman, 21 of them stayed on the infield. The Syracuse, N.Y. native also had five assists and one putout. Godzak improved to 3-1 in league play and conference opponents are batting .152 against the lefty.
Godzak also was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on April 1, after throwing the first seven innings of the first nine-inning no-hitter in program history.
Canisius has had a league-best eight players earn a league-high 10 weekly awards from the conference office this season. The eight players have claimed a total of 10 awards, including three Player of the Week, two Pitcher of the Week and five Rookie of the Week awards.
On the season, Godzak ranks third in the MAAC in earned run average (2.52), fourth in strikeouts (51) and first in opponents’ batting average (.198) and is tied for third with six victories.
Canisius (31-11) plays two mid-week games in Western New York this week. The Griffs play at St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, and at Buffalo on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. each day.
